Implementation Working Group 4 Thematic Vision Webinar on "Integrated Energy Systems" will present the thematic Vision developed by the IWG‑4 on Integrated Energy Systems (IES) in Europe across three time horizons, 2030, 2040, and 2050.
It shows how research and innovation (R&I) can support the transition from secure operability and early deployment, to system-wide optimisation, and finally to long-term stewardship of a climate-neutral, resilient, and socially accepted energy system. Across all horizons, transversal enablers such as digitalisation, cybersecurity, skills, circularity, and societal participation are essential for turning Integrated Energy Systems into trusted socio-technical infrastructures.
The thematic Vision was developed along the six targets:
- Enhancing European strategic independence through energy security and resilient supply chains.
- Develop a resilient integrated energy system
- Ensure environmental sustainability beyond carbon.
- Deploy an efficient system, ensuring integration
- Develop a cost-effective energy system
- Ensure a just energy transition
This thematic Vision has been developed by the IWG-4 from three different sources:
- A Workshop with IWG-4 members
- An extensive survey among all IWG-4 members
- A workshop with ETIP SNET Governing Board
The results from these sources have been complemented with current reports and publications by the European Commission and the International Energy Agency (IEA). The Vision outlines how the work of IWG-4 will contribute to the EU’s energy objectives and how the technologies will develop in the coming years.
The webinar is moderated by Susanne Windischberger (AIT - ETIP SNET Secretariat).
