European Technology & Innovation Platforms (ETIPs) have been created by the European Commission in the framework of the Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET Plan). It brings together a multitude of stakeholders and experts from the energy sector. The role of the ETIP Smart Networks for Energy Transition (SNET) is to guide Research, Development & Innovation (R&I) to support Europe’s energy transition. More specifically, its objectives include:
- Reporting on the implementation of R&I activities at European, national, regional and local level.
- Providing input to the SET Plan Action 4, which addresses the technical challenges in the transformation of the energy system.
- Identifying innovation barriers, including those related to regulation and financing
- Developing enhanced knowledge-sharing mechanisms to facilitate the deployment of R&I results.
- Formulating consolidated stakeholder views on R&I to European Energy Policy initiatives.
- Developing essential tools, solutions and technologies for the creation of smart grids and the effective implementation of the energy transition.
- Preparing and updating Visions, Roadmaps and Implementation Plans that consolidated stakeholder views on R&I for European Energy Policy initiatives
- Coordinating with other initiatives at national (Members States), European and international level to reinforce the alignment of Strategic agendas and R&I priorities and needs.
ETIP SNET is only one of nine ETIPs set up by the European Commission. These are key industry-led communities recognised from the EU. They provide consensus-based strategic advice to the SET plan and work together on interdisciplinary and overlapping issues. The others are:
- ETIP Bioenergya
- ETIP Wind
- ETIP Deep Geothermal
- ETIP Ocean Energy
- ETIP Photovoltaic (ETIP PV)
- ETIP Renewable Heating and Cooling:
- ETIP Sustainable Nuclear Energy (SNETP)
- ETIP Zero Emission Fossil Fuel Power (ZEP)
Governance

To ensure broad representation of stakeholders and facilitate agile and efficient operation, the Governance structure of ETIP SNET is organised as follows:
- Governing Board (GB) - It provides strategic direction for all activities of ETIP SNET.
- Executive Committee (ExCo) - It provides executive support to the Governing Board, monitors the activities of the yearly WGs workplans and prepares the decisions to be taken at the Governing Board level;
- Five permanent Working Groups (WG) - These are opened to experts in any relevant sectors. They offer their expertise to help achieve the objectives of ETIP SNET and provide technical input to both the European Commission and the Governing Board;
- National Stakeholders Coordination group (NSCG) - It provides a sounding board and exchange platform for national R&I stakeholders in the energy systems and networks sector. Its purpose is to support the implementation of SET-Plan Action 4 on Integrated and Flexible Energy Systems;
- Secretariat Team – It provides technical, operational and logistical support for the management, implementation and dissemination of the ETIP SNET initiative.
