Takeaways from the 19th ETIP SNET Regional Workshop on Integrating Renewables and Grid Flexibility in South-Eastern Europe

Regional Workshop at PwC
Monday. 18 November 2024

The 19th ETIP SNET Regional Workshop, held in October, brought together over 120 energy experts and stakeholders to address the complexities of integrating renewable energy sources (RES) while maintaining grid flexibility in the South-Eastern European region – Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Malta, Romania, and Slovenia. The event focused on the roles of Transmission and Distribution System Operators (TSOs and DSOs) as they work to integrate increasing levels of renewable energy sources into the grid.

The workshop opened with George Paunescu, Policy Offer at the Directorate of Energy of the European Commission, who highlighted the relevance of the ETIP SNET platform in fostering stakeholder collaboration and guiding innovation and energy transition efforts. ETIP SNET Chair Luis Cunha (EU DSO Entity) and Co-chair Antonio Iliceto (ENTSO-E) shared an overview and updates of the initiative’s mission, vision and governance structure.

A key panel on R&I priorities featured perspectives from different experts highlighting the need to address gaps in EU R&I priorities through targeted programs. Further discussions examined industry needs and included Italian and Greek case studies, such as Italy’s "RomFlex" and Greece’s "IANOS," which showcased solutions for improving grid flexibility, including approaches for regional challenges like grid imbalances and isolated island networks.

The workshop concluded with a call for strong regulatory, technical, and financial support to drive the green transition, leveraging distributed energy production and enhanced cooperation among system operators. These insights underline ETIP SNET’s continued role in guiding stakeholders through the complex journey toward a sustainable, resilient energy future.
