Insightful discussions unfolded at the BRIDGE/ETIP SNET sessions at Enlit 2024. Experts reunited together to explore the key opportunities and challenges of aligning the power and transport sectors.
The Summit session, “Coordinated energy infrastructure planning”, moderated by PwC partner’s Giorgio Biscardini discussed strategies for electricity, gas, and hydrogen integration, focusing on regulatory needs, infrastructure updates, digital tools, and financing. Luis Cunha (ETIP SNET Chair) introduced ETIP SNET’s coordinated energy infrastructure planning for decarbonisation. The session was followed by presentations from experts Mark Norton (Smart Wires/ETIP SNET) who outlined a roadmap vision, as well as Vincenzo Ranieri (ENEL), Pier Lorenzo Dell’Orco (Italgas), and Charles Esser (E.DSO), who shared insights on European best practices.
George Paunescu, Policy Officer at the Directorate for Energy, European Commission, opened the two sessions in the European Project Zone – Sustainable transport integration into the grid and Energy communities’ impact on the grid – by outlining EU policies for integrating sustainability in the transportation and energy community sectors with the energy grid. The panels featured key project coordinators and industry leaders.
The first session spotlight was on Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology, with a dynamic debate involving Antonio Iliceto (ENTSO-E, ETIP SNET Co-Chair), Fernando David Martin Utrilla (BeFlexible Project Coordinator), Goncalo Pinto Mendes (Drive2X Project Coordinator), Hugo Morais (EV4EU Project Coordinator), and Laurent Schmitt (Dcbel/ETIP SNET WG4 Co-Chair/EDDIE project).
Speakers emphasised the need for clear data and interface standards to support the integration of smart home charging systems. The session concluded with an interactive audience discussion on incentives versus obligations, agreeing that, while incentives are crucial, clear obligations are necessary to accelerate the transition to sustainable transport and drive rapid progress in integrating e-mobility with the grid.
In the second session, speakers Elissaios Sarmas (CRETE VALLEY project), Ilaria Losa (ETIP SNET), and Helena Gerard (U2DEMO project and BRIDGE Chair) presented Energy Communities’ Impact on Grids report focusing on the technical effects of energy communities, particularly the centralised vs. decentralised grid architecture for DSO cooperation. The session concluded with participants debating data exchange needs, regulatory issues, and key trends such as adapting market structures and the potential for local markets to promote energy communities.
