To keep pace with the evolving energy landscape, a comprehensive stakeholder process is essential to continuously assess industry needs, and to shape research priorities. This effort plays a crucial role in developing the ETIP SNET Research and Innovation (R&I) Roadmap, a key document that guides the future of smart grids and energy systems while informing the European Commission on strategic directions.
As part of this ongoing work, ETIP SNET hosted a workshop in January, bringing together industry leaders, policymakers, and researchers to explore updates and potential new structures for the R&I Roadmap. The objective was to ensure its alignment with the latest technological advancements and policy developments.
The Roadmap is organised into High-Level Use Cases (HLUCs), which provide its structural framework and serve as a foundation for identifying research priorities, further detailed through Priority Project Concepts (PPCs). Experts from AIT (Austrian Institute of Technology) conducted a gap analysis, comparing the existing Roadmap against recent technical and policy developments. Their findings highlighted the need for updates and, in many cases, a restructuring of the HLUCs to better reflect the industry's evolving needs.
Beyond technical advancements, the workshop highlighted the importance of technology integration, interoperability, techno-economic aspects, workforce development, public acceptance, and social licence. Additionally, climate change mitigation and adaptation emerged as central themes of the discussion, underscoring their implementation aspects in shaping energy policy and governance.
The restructuring of the HLUCs is currently underway and will be further discussed in an upcoming meeting in February. At the ETIP SNET Governing Board Meeting in March, the revised HLUCs will be presented, with discussions advancing to the next level of detail, the PPCs will be discussed.
