Thursday. 17 April 2025

Last April, the first ETIP SNET Regional Workshop of 2025, focusing on the Northern Europe Region, took place online, gathering more than 70 participants from the energy and mobility sectors. The event, “Sustainable Transport Integration on the Grids”, offered key insights and engaged discussion into the technical, policy, and research challenges of embedding e-mobility within energy systems.

The workshop opened with remarks from George Paunescu of DG ENER, who underscored regional cooperation's importance in driving Europe’s clean energy transition. This was followed by an overview of ETIP SNET’s mission and vision by Co-Chair Antonio Iliceto, who presented an overview of the initiative and its strategic role within the EU R&I agenda.

A highlight of the morning was the presentation of the paper presented by the ETIP SNET Working Group 1, “Grid Integration of sustainable transport”, delivered by Santiago Gallego Amores (WG1 Chair) and Franco di Persio (WG2 Co-Chair). Their discussion explored how sustainable mobility integration impacts the energy grids.

The conversation then shifted research priorities on a national level, with insightful discussion among George Paunescu (DG ENER), Ditte Stougaard Stiler (Nordic Energy Research), Susanne Ackeby (RISE Sweden), and Wickie Lassen Agdal (Danish Energy Agency), sharing, cross-border collaboration, and lessons learnt.

The second part of the workshop focused on innovative technologies and solutions in a real-world application. Moderated by Albana Ilo (ETIP SNET WG1 Co-Chair), the session featured presentations from Mattia Marinelli (DTU e-mobility research group), Rebecca Samuelsson (E-ON Sweden), Matthias Hofmann (Statnett), and Ulf Ceder (Scania). Each offered a unique perspective on emerging solutions in Northern Europe to facilitate sustainable transport integration.

The workshop concluded with an interactive wrap-up session moderated by Nuno Souza e Silva, inviting participants to share reflections, priorities, and future directions.

The event not only showcased the vibrancy of the Northern European energy innovation landscape but also strengthened the collaborative spirit needed to tackle the complex challenge of integrating transport and energy systems.
