Energy research and Innovation for a Competitive Europe

The SET Conference, launched in 2008, fosters the discussion around the SET plan and the common goal of accelerating the development of low-carbon technologies through the cooperation among Member States, industry, research and other stakeholders.

This year's theme, "Energy Research and Innovation for a Competitive Europe," highlighted the need to reinforce research and innovation landscape. This reinforcement is crucial to ultimately overcome the energy crisis and tackle the global climate challenge.

Norela Constantinescu, Chair of ETIP SNET and Head of Innovation Section with ENTSO-E, took part to a panel discussion ‘Future integrated and resilient energy system' together with other industry and European Commission experts (Paula Pinho - DG ENERGY, Layla Sawyer - currENT and Dirk Van Hertem - KU Leuven).

In the panel discussion, moderated by Helena Gerard (VITO), insights on challenges and solutions for grid innovation were discussed. The key role of European policy framework such as Digitalization of Energy Action Plan and the upcoming Grid Action Plan which facilitate the development and uptake of smart and new grid technology solutions. From the session emerged that innovation will happen on multiple levels (hardware, software, planning and operations, material use, skills, market design and the overall regulatory framework), therefore collaboration amongst stakeholders is extremely important. Yet, it is equally important to bring up to scale the new technologies (example DC related technologies) and solutions into the use .

To build a better European energy future, we need to bring research, industry and policy together.
