Experts from across Central Europe gathered to explore how Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Generative AI (GenAI) are reshaping the future of smart grids and energy systems.

Held in Munich on 8 May 2025 as part of the EM-POWER Conference, the 21st ETIP SNET Regional Workshop brought together stakeholders from Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Poland, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia. The event focused on strategies for effective AI deployment and regional cooperation in advancing intelligent energy infrastructure across central European countries.

The workshop featured expert insights into current challenges and emerging best practices. Opening remarks by Luis Cunha, Chair of ETIP SNET, called for standardised frameworks and expanded educational efforts to drive AI adoption. Discussions throughout the day emphasised the importance of data management, interoperability, and recognising data as a strategic asset.

Case studies from Horizon projects led by Elena Boskov-Kovacs (Blueprint Energy Solutions GmbH), Diego Arnone (ENG), Rachel Berryman (Siemens), and Karen auf der Horst (NETZE BW) demonstrated the successful integration of AI in energy operations. A panel discussion with Mihai Călin (AIT), Milos Subasic (Hitachi Energy), Giuseppe Procaccianti (Dexter Energy), David Steenmeijer (Enexis), and Pascal Plank (AGI and ENTSO-E) further explored implementation gaps, highlighting the need for regulatory clarity, public trust, and closer collaboration between industry and academia.

Participants stressed the importance of tailoring the upcoming AI Act to the specific needs of the energy sector across Europe to avoid fragmented regulations. They identified the first quarter of 2026 as a key moment for ensuring compliance and aligning strategies.

The event concluded with a collective call to strengthen education, policy coordination, and investment to build a resilient, AI-driven energy future for Europe.
