A first workshop in the series on the Strategic Position Paper, "Unlocking the Potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Generative AI (GenAI) in Smart Grids," took place on January 30, 2025. This event marked the launch of an in-depth discussion on AI and GenAI's transformative role in shaping the future of smart energy grids. The workshop aimed to initiate a broad dialogue, raise awareness, and gather contributions from participants and stakeholders engaged in this transition.
Given the rapid evolution of AI technologies, this discussion forms part of a larger effort to develop a comprehensive strategic position paper guiding the integration of AI and GenAI into Europe’s energy transition. The paper will analyse the policy landscape, assess technological advancements, and propose a strategic roadmap with actionable recommendations for energy sector stakeholders. A coordinated, sector-wide approach is essential to ensure AI’s cost-effective and sustainable adoption, particularly as the European Commission advances legislative and funding initiatives to shape AI’s role in the energy sector. As AI adoption accelerates across industries, alignment, and coherent implementation will be critical to supporting Europe’s climate and industrial goals.
The workshop, organised by Luís Cunha, Chairman of ETIP SNET and leader of this Task Force, featured a keynote address from Stravos Stamatoukos of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Energy (DG ENER), who provided valuable insights into European energy and digital policy initiatives. Contributors Antonello Monti, Ricardo Bessa, David Steenmeijer, Milos Subasic, Subhash Lakshminarayana, and John Ogundiran presented the current version of the position paper, sparking active stakeholder discussions to ensure a diverse range of perspectives is reflected.
Looking ahead, the second webinar will take place on March 13th, providing a platform to present and discuss version 2.0 of the paper, gather final contributions, and refine key insights. The final webinar, scheduled for April 3rd, will unveil the completed report. These sessions represent crucial milestones, offering stakeholders the opportunity to engage, contribute, and influence the future of AI and GenAI in smart grids.
The ETIP SNET and BRIDGE community are invited to participate in this process by completing the following surveys by February 23:
