What is the role of cities and regions in Europe’s energy transition? How can local and regional actors accelerate the deployment of low-carbon technologies to unlock the full benefits of Europe’s decarbonisation? What investment mechanisms can foster the market uptake of innovative eco products and services? In which concrete ways does the EU’s SET Plan contribute to fast-tracking the energy transition in our cities and regions? How are the SET Plan Implementation Plans, that promote cooperation among Member States, researchers and industry, progressing to develop the key technologies for the energy transition?
These are some of the questions that will be guiding the 12th high-level SET Plan conference in Bucharest on 12-14 June, co-organised by the European Commission, the Presidency of the Council of the European Union and the European Committee of the Regions, with the support of the Romanian Municipalities Association and the Romanian Ministry of Energy.
In order to further boost the discussion among local and regional authorities, this year’s event has been combined with the external Environment, Climate change and Energy (ENVE) Commission and Conference from the European Committee of the Regions, where more than 120 EU local and regional leaders are working on environment, climate change, energy and space policies.
Bringing together decision-makers, stakeholders and researchers in the wake of the increased priority given to climate change by voters in the European elections, the conference will also be a good moment to reflect on the EU 2050 Long-Term Strategy (LTS), published by the Commission at the end of last year, and the way this strategy translates into Research and Innovation priorities in the EU’s new research support programme, Horizon Europe. It provides a useful forum in which to take stock of innovation in the clean energy transition and to discuss further steps on making the pathway to climate neutrality more concrete.
The European Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET-Plan) aims to accelerate the development and deployment of low-carbon technologies that will deliver affordable and sustainable clean energy to consumers. It seeks to improve new technologies from an integrated approach and bring down costs by coordinating national research efforts to accelerate delivering EU 2030 and 2050 targets.
Annual SET-plan conferences have been organised in, and together with, EU Council Presidency countries since 2008, offering a chance for decision-makers, stakeholders and researchers to meet and assess the SET-Plan’s progress.
