After a successful 2018, EU energy stakeholders keep momentum going in 2019 and appoint new Work Group chairs

The 11th Governing Board meeting of the European Technology and Innovation Platform for Smart Networks for the Energy Transition (ETIP SNET) on 24 January 2019 in Brussels presented an opportunity for key energy stakeholders to come together to reflect on last year’s achievements, appoint some new Working Groups Chairs and co-chairs and discuss planning for 2019.

After an eventful and successful 2018 which included the nomination of Nikos Hatziargyriou as chairman, the launching of the ETIP SNET Vision 2050, the ETIP SNET webinarsregional workshops in Zagreb, Helsinki, Brussels and Madrid and efforts to shape the upcoming Horizon Europe Missions; ETIP SNET looks to 2019 with more determination and ambition to shape the energy system of the future.

Nikos Hatziargyriou (EDSO) who was selected to lead the platform in January 2018 will continue his chairmanship until June 2019. He will be sided by vice chair Guido Guida (ENTSO-E) and vice chair Eliano Russo (EASE). Guido Guida is due to take over the chairman role as of July 2019.

During the Governing Board meeting the following candidates were selected to fill in the vacancies for:

  • WG2 Chair: Storage technologies and sector interfaces – Yves Schlumberger (EDF)
  • WG1 co-chair: Reliable, economic and efficient smart grid system – Gareth Bissell (ENEL)
  • WG3 co-chair: Flexible Generation – Martin Pogoruetz (Andritz AG & Energy Technologies Europe)
  • WG5 co-chair: Innovation implementation in the business environment – Aurelie Faure-Schuyer (Insight-e)

In addition, two new “rotating” vice-chairs representing working groups within the chairmanship of the ETIP SNET were appointed, these are: Antonio Iliceto and Michael Huebner as WG1 and WG6 (NSCG) chairs thereby replacing Maher Chebbo (WG4 Chair) and Emmanouil Kakaras (WG5 chair until 2018) in this function.

ETIP SNET would like to congratulate all candidates on their new roles.

Some of the new ETIP SNET 2019 activities that were discussed at the meeting included: the ETIP SNET Energy Stories, the development of a new roadmap and implementation plan and Inter-ETIP events.

European Commission project officer Michela Marasco also took the opportunity to update the Governing Board on the latest news on Horizon Europe missions and partnership schemes for which ETIP SNET will continue efforts to shape.
