Key energy stakeholders advance a more efficient, secure and environmentally friendly European energy system by 2050

On 27 June 2018 at the Square in Brussels, the European Technology and Innovation Platform Smart Networks for Energy Transition (ETIP SNET) will present its Vision 2050 for:

A low-carbon, secure, reliable, resilient, accessible, cost-efficient, and market-based pan-European integrated energy system supplying the entire society and paving the way for a fully carbon-neutral circular economy by the year 2050, while maintaining and extending global industrial leadership in energy systems during the energy transition.

Launching the special ETIP SNET report: Vision 2050 – Integrating Smart Networks for the Energy Transition: Serving Society while Protecting the Environment, the high-profile event will include the confirmed participation of: Nikos Hatziargyriou, ETIP SNET Chairman and Patrizia Toia, Vice-chair of the ITRE Committee – European Parliament.

More than 300 experts have joined forces with national representatives to provide a consolidated vision that has been further debated and adapted in regional workshops and public consultations.

“The Vision offers a comprehensive overview of Europe’s current energy system and invites stakeholders to take the necessary R&I steps to ensure that Europe can achieve a successful energy transition and reach a near zero-carbon footprint.” says Nikos Hatziargyriou, ETIP SNET Chairman

In a first part of the event, a joint presentation of the ETIP SNET 2050 Vision will be given by the ETIP SNET Chairman; alongside ETIP SNET Vice-chairs Konstantin Staschus and Thierry Le Boucher whilst a Keynote speech will be offered by Ms. Toia.

In a second part, several panel sessions will include the confirmed participation of policymakers and industry leaders such as:

  • Andreea Strachinescu, European Commission, DG Energy, Head of Unit C2, New energy technologies, innovation and clean coal
  • Jose Cotta, European Commission, DG RTD, Head of Unit G2, Advanced energy production
  • Viorel Peca, European Commission, DG CNCT, Head of Unit C3, Future and Emerging Technologies
  • Christian Buchel, EDSO for Smartgrids, Chairman
  • Susanne Nies, ENTSO-E, Strategy and Communication Manager
  • Simone Landolina, IEA, Head International Partnerships and Initiatives
  • Eva Chamizo Llatas, European Association for Storage of Energy, President
  • Gerhard Stryi-Hipp, Renewable Heating and Cooling ETIP, President
  • Beate Raabe, Eurogas, Secretary General

The ETIP SNET Vision 2050 is the basis for defining the specifications for further research and innovation needs in the transition from today towards Europe’s energy systems of the future. Its purpose is to inspire all stakeholders to discover the RD&I challenges associated with a 2050 low-carbon, fully-integrated, and circular pan-European energy system with the electricity system as its backbone.

Attending journalists will be given the opportunity to ask the speakers to clarify any further details. For the full agenda please refer to following web page that will provide the most up to date information on the event: /etip-snet-vision-2050/

About the ETIP SNET

Since 2016, the key energy system players in Europe, represented through their EU associations, platforms and national stakeholders[1], started a strong and unique cooperation under the umbrella of ETIP SNET – The European Technology and Innovation Platform Smart Networks for Energy Transition. Its role is to guide research, development and innovation to support Europe’s energy transition with innovation for the transmission and distribution systems. These systems form the technical and market platforms where clean electricity generation, empowered customers, storage technologies, smarter grids and interfaces to gas, heat and transport networks make the energy transition happen in secure and affordable ways.
